Problems with your oral health can also pose problems for other parts of your body.  Oral health can affect your cardiovascular health, respiratory system, and even pregnancy. 

A common oral health problem includes tooth decay or cavities. These are damaged areas on the surface of your teeth that develop into tiny holes or huge openings. Children, teenagers, and older adults usually experience the problem.  


Tooth Cavities Causes  

Plaques usually cause tooth cavities. Plaque is a sticky substance that binds the teeth together. It can be a combination of bacteria, food particles, saliva, and acid.  

Consuming sugary drinks and food can also cause tooth cavities as bacteria transform sugar into acid. Some people are more at risk of tooth decay as compared to others, especially those:  

  • Consuming too many sugary and acidic drinks and food  
  • People with poor oral hygiene  
  • Not getting enough fluoride, which is essential in rebuilding weakened tooth enamel  
  • With dry mouth  
  • With eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia  
  • Acid reflux disease  


Tooth Decay Prevention  

  • Brushing teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for two minutes  
  • Flossing and using mouthwash  
  • Limiting consumption of sugary and acidic food and drinks  
  • Replacing toothbrush two to three months of usage or if bristles are already spread apart  
  • Have regular dental checkups  
  • Avoid smoking
