Seasonal Influenza: Here’s What to Know

Flu viruses have different types, which are Influenza A, B, C, and D.  

Influenza A and B are mainly found in humans. Influenza A can also occur in other species such as birds and pigs. However, only Influenza type A viruses are known to have caused pandemics. 

Meanwhile, influenza C is known to occur among dogs and pigs while influenza D mainly existed in cattle.   


Seasonal Influenza  

An onset of fever is one of the symptoms of seasonal influenza. 

Other symptoms of seasonal influenza include:  

  • Dry cough  
  • Muscle pain  
  • Sore throat and runny nose  
  • Headache  
  • Fatigue and weakness  


The flu does not usually require a visit to the doctor. Some start to get better by resting at home and taking over-the-counter cold and flu medications. There are times when seasonal flu can cause severe cases.  

The World Health Organization noted that the annual epidemics of flu result in about three to five million severe illnesses.  

There are high-risk groups for influenza including:  

  • Those under two years old  
  • 65 years or older  
  • Pregnant or just given birth  
  • Those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or HIV  



Ways to Prevent Flu  

Vaccination is the main prevention for getting seasonal influenza. To reduce your chances of getting infected, here are some preventive measures:  

  • Proper handwashing  
  • Covering mouth when sneezing and coughing  
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth  
  • Avoid interaction with sick people
