What’s the Difference Between a Vegan Diet and a Lacto-Vegetarian Diet?

Plant-based diets started becoming a popular dietary program sometime in the middle of 2010. There is a belief that it was better than the conventional diets, with its offered health benefits such as improving the gut, boosting the immune system, and reducing inflammation.  

Two plant-based diets became more popular than others, known as the vegan diet and vegetarian diet. But what are the differences between the two?  

 

Vegan Diet  

A vegan diet is considered one of the strictest plant-based diets. The diet excludes all forms of animal products, including honey, milk, and eggs.  

In addition, it adheres to the idea that there should be ethical consumption. Veganism believes that animals should be free from human use, whether it’s food, clothing, science, or entertainment.  

The plant-based diet offers a range of health benefits including:  

  • More fiber, antioxidants, and potassium in the diet  
  • Lose excess weight due to high fiber diet  
  • Lowers developing type 2 diabetes  
  • Lower risk of prostate cancer and heart disease  
  • Higher energy levels  

If you are eyeing to try the vegan diet, there are preparations and considerations to take. You must ensure that you can still have adequate levels of protein by choosing meatless options such as tofu, edamame, and tempeh.  

Aside from protein, there should also be alternatives for foods rich in calcium, healthy fats, and vitamin B12, among other nutrients.  

 

Lacto-Vegetarian Diet  

Lacto-vegetarian diet is a more flexible type of vegetarianism. It is a variation of the vegetarian diet that excludes meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. However, it includes dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and milk.  

Just like the vegan diet, it offers several health benefits:  

  • Boosts heart health  
  • Enhances blood sugar control  
  • Still gets calcium from the consumption of dairy products
